This new major fellowship, introduced in 2006, will be awarded every other year for two years' research in a specified study area and seeks to explore current design issues. The next fellowship is due to be awarded in 2008.
This single fellowship will be competitive and applications are now being sought. The Commissioners have selected as the subject for this year's award:
Design thinking is vital in harnessing the many achievements of scientists and engineers to create valuable results for the general public. We have many talented scientists in the UK and also highly creative designers but we are not always achieving the potential benefits in productive industry. The fellowship seeks to identify how more value can be created by the encouragement and integration of design thinking into the wider world.
A broad, holistic approach is encouraged, the aim being to 'make a difference'. Entries will accordingly be accepted not only from individuals but also from formal or informal partnerships. Candidates should be UK or Commonwealth citizens, aiming to carry out research over a 2 year period, culminating in either a personal mark of distinction (e.g. PhD) or a milestone output of significance. Projects that aim to inform the wider community are particularly encouraged. In all cases, candidates are asked to identify a mentor who can contribute to, and make expert and objective commentary on the candidate's work, and who will ensure linkage and promulgation of the work to the appropriate peer group.
Download the application form Word doc which candidates should complete, together with a submission outlining the proposed project of no more than two pages of A4, plus a CV. Lavishly produced or illustrated submissions are not required. The full application should then be sent preferably by e-mail as a PDF to applications@royalcommission1851.org. Alternatively it can be sent by post to the Royal Commission at the address below.
Based on these applications a shortlist will be selected and these candidates will be invited to provide a further, more comprehensive written submission before being interviewed.
