- Aim to stimulate industrial design capability among the country’s most able science and engineering graduates
- About eight Industrial Design Studentships are offered each year for outstanding engineering or science graduates who wish to develop their capabilities in industrial design and who aspire to becoming leading designers in British industry.
- All tuition fees, up to the normal UK course level for UK students PAID (We do not pay ELQ top-up fees).
- Stipend of £10,000 pa PAID
- Allowance of £850 pa for materials PAID
- Some travel expenses may be PAID

Jessi Baker
Innovation Design Engineering Royal College of Art 2009

Jessi studied for an Engineering degree at Cambridge University, although upon leaving school she was torn as to whether she should pursue studies in engineering or art and design; finding a degree course that mixed the two was somewhat tricky. Having always wanted to work in a field that unites artistic creativity and science and technology, with a firm engineering background Jessi applied for the Innovation Design Engineering course at the Royal College of Art to finally combine her technical training with her love for art and design.
The Royal Commission's foundations in promoting brilliant design through uniting engineering and creativity inspired and facilitated Jessi to truly become a blend of the two. She now works for global brand agency TBWA creating innovative experiences for brands; she works particularly in the interaction design of installations and experiences that fuse the physical and the digital. She also consults for start-ups based in London on the use of emerging technology in user experience design.
Ryan McGinley
MA Industrial Design, University of Northumbria 2009

Ryan achieved distinction in MA Industrial Design at Northumbria University's School of Design. His final project, ‘Look with Curious Eyes’, explored how we find, frame and explore the problem/opportunity space in design. Using design ethnography and design thinking, his work specialised in getting designers out of the studio and into environments where people’s needs are not being met.
Ryan received a BSc in Product Design & Innovation from Strathclyde University, graduating in 2009. After a short spell in Beijing as a consultant, and a small role at Hoover, he was awarded the studentship to attend MA Industrial Design at Northumbria. The award allowed Ryan to concentrate all his efforts on his studies and excel with distinction for every module of the degree. His work and experience framing problems and opportunities allowed him to move in to consulting with PA Consulting Group, working primarily on technology & innovation.
